What is your hope in life? Hope is confident expectation of something good in future. For many of us, it may be based on relationships, health, work, money, power, knowledge and so on. If you think about it, the things which gave us hope in the past may not be the source of hope now and it may be changing over period of time. Also there is so much despair around us to crush the hope and many of us struggle with hopelessness and even fall in to depression when we don’t find hope in life. What can give us the sustaining hope in life and after? How can we live in such confidence?
When something wonderful happens in life, our joy and happiness gets elevated. But overtime when we get used to it, the same things which gave us that joy starts to fade away in value. As a consequence we fail to appreciate all the blessings we have in life. Think about it, we realize the value of good health only when we fall sick, we appreciate all that we have only when we are in need of those blessings. God has blessed us with all that we need but overtime we tend to take it for granted. When we count the blessings in our life, it makes us grateful and helps us to live in content. This is true for spiritual blessings as well. In previous post(Blessings Part 1), we saw the blessings God has shown to us through Christ – Chosen, adopted and accepted. In this post, we will continue to rediscover the riches which God has showered on us.
Many times we get overwhelmed with all that is going on in life. We don’t take the time to count the blessings God has showered on us. How do you feel if suppose you went through a tough time financially but later found out that you had all the money and more with an inheritance you received but you never really paid attention to it. In fact, it is exactly what many of us do live a life without realizing the riches and blessings we have inherited through Christ. Are we enjoying our inheritance today? Do we know what are these riches?
Are we worshiping God or do we have any idols in his place? Many times we take exception thinking that we don’t have any idols but the answer depends on what we call as an idol. Anything that robs the place of God is an idol. What is taking his place in our life? John in his closing remark warned about this subject to his audience and this can be a wake up call for us as well.
There is no pick and choose between love, faith and truth as a Christian. Hearing true gospel gives us the faith and this saving faith produces love in our life. John, known as the apostle of love talked a lot about loving one another in his first epistle. Today’s text from 1 John is the third time he expounded on this topic of love for our brothers and sisters. Eventhough he referred to loving others, there is an implied question, Do we love God? since loving others is an evidence that we love him as a child of God. What is our answer to this question? How can we know if we love God and his children? How is this love connected with faith and truth?
