Pursuing Purity

purityWe are living in times when purity is becoming a relative term; Good or bad is defined based on how everyone feels about it. Many follow that “nothing is wrong if it makes you happy”. Purity in life may not be a big deal with relativistic thinking. But think about this, will you drink impure water? we know it can be hazardous. Being pure in our thought, word and action is important to live a purposeful life. In this post, let us read more about pursuing purity in life.

3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. – Ephesians 5:3-13

Current and historical events tell us that it is disastrous if each one defines good or bad in own terms. It is heart wrenching to the see the heinous crimes committed based on people’s ideologies. Statistics says that around 142 million people were killed in 20th century alone by people who thought they were good in their standards. Don’t we still witness these in our day to day lives? Where do we get the standards for moral purity?

Bible says that God is the source of moral purity and he defines all that is good and bad. He is the light in its purest form. There is no darkness in this light. He is absolute truth, purity, righteousness, love, knowledge, wisdom, joy, peace, hope and much more. In our natural mind, humans are separated from God and his fullness. We are attracted to the lust of our flesh and yield to all kinds of impurities. Even though we can differentiate good and bad, we don’t always follow it and sometimes many go to the extremes to fulfill their evil desires.

Apostle Paul lists several of the works of flesh. Many of those are very common now and accepted in to society. Think about this, sexual immoralities, impurities, dirty talks and dirty comedies are all over media and corrupting scores of people. We are getting insensitive and letting these creep in to our personal lives; families are getting destroyed. There are so many scandals, frauds and corruption we see everyday; people run behind money and nothing seems bad to become rich. Sadly, most of them will defend their position with corrupted thinking.

Unless we become a new person from inside out, we cannot overcome these fleshly acts. Amazingly, God by his grace sent Jesus Christ to be the light of the world. He died for our sins and gave us forgiveness. When we have faith in him, we become the children of light. Jesus said that out of the abundance of heart, mouth speaks. When light starts to shine, there is no place for darkness. It purifies our thoughts, words and actions. Christ makes us a new creation who can walk in the light of God.

As children of light, we are called to walk in purity reflecting his light. Instead of old behavior, we can now produce fruits of goodness, righteousness, and truth through holy spirit. Light and darkness are exclusive to each other. If we say we walk in the light of God, we cannot continue to live in sin. When we live in purity, it will expose impurities around us and can make others realize. What is your experience with purity in life?

Being pure is not following some rules with list of do’s and don’ts. It comes with God’s love in our heart. We pursue purity because God is pure and it is his will for us. If we submit to God and trust in Christ, he will empower us to live in purity from the inside out. His holy spirit gives us revelation, fills us with knowledge and wisdom to walk in the will of God. We need to love his word because it is pure (Psalm 119:140) and this living word can transform our lives. When we live in his truth, walk with his wisdom in the power of his spirit; we can be a light in this world!

  1. Peter that was a great message but hard hitting for those with itching ears, yes today as Jesus told us it would be, we see the same depravity becoming a reality like the times of Noah, yes life goes on but sadly in a downward spiral. We need to keep our focus on what is pleasing to God as you shared and as confirmed in the Scripture below.

Philippians 4:6-8 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

I was commenting on a Blog recently, owned by a woman who is a reasonably new Christian and there was a very crude and suggestive comment by a man, I used the same Scripture as you shared Peter, Ephesians 5:3-13 to rebuke him. My Internet and Phone providers have lied to me more than once and some who call themselves Christian Bloggers, have abused me and others have slandered me behind my back no genuine evidence just what they have propagated.

You asked us Peter ….. to think about sexual immoralities, impurities, dirty talks and dirty comedies are all over media and corrupting scores of people. Have you also heard the Lyrics of some songs today. I will leave a link for you below from my Blog but prepared to be shocked, although you may have already heard the same song or ones like it before, as I say rubbish in rubbish out and that goes for bad Theology too that we hear today, such as….. don’t worry if you sin, we all do anyway and we are under grace so it doesn’t really matter. We must put our Carnal flesh to death by the Spirit as we aim to be perfected in Love.

Christian Love in Christ Jesus – Anne.

    • Very true Anne, we are living in times of moral down spiral and sadly it is considered normal for many. It is shocking to see the lyrics of the songs you shared in the post and it is similar to what i have heard. We are called for a great purpose in Christ and as you shared, we need to focus on Christ exposing the darkness around us.

Thanks for the comment Anne! Have a wonderful day!
