Count your blessings (Part 1)

countyourblessingsMany times we get overwhelmed with all that is going on in life. We don’t take the time to count the blessings God has showered on us. How do you feel if suppose you went through a tough time financially but later found out that you had all the money and more with an inheritance you received but you never really paid attention to it. In fact, it is exactly what many of us do live a life without realizing the riches and blessings we have inherited through Christ. Are we enjoying our inheritance today? Do we know what are these riches?

Reading – Ephesians 1-1-6

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. – Ephesians 1:3

Paul has written this wonderful epistle to show us the treasure trove of our inheritance and it can make a huge impact to come to a realization of all that we have been blessed. When we think about the blessings God has given us, most of the times we overlook the blessings we have in a spiritual dimension. These are riches which money cannot buy. How many people with surplus money living an empty life searching a way out of the grip fear, depression, anxiety, worry, sadness and so on? They are deprived of spiritual blessings which are replaced by all those world has to offer. It is in this spiritual dimension God has given us every blessing we need through Jesus Christ.

God is the source of all these spiritual blessings. James told that every good and perfect gift is from our father in heaven (James 1:17). Do we get hold of this truth in life? Do we have to worry about our present circumstances if only we realize that we know the one who holds all the blessing and furthermore already gave to us? What an amazing truth that God has given us everything that we need to have when we come to Jesus. All three persons of the Godhead involved in giving us these blessings. In below text Paul started to show us the treasures of God the father and then in next few verses he moves to the blessings from God the son and God the holy spirit which we can see in next post.

Blessings from God the father:

4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. – Ephesians 1:4-6
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him – John 6:44

He Chose us:

God the father chose us before the creation of the world. This is so significant that we were chosen before eternity past. Do we realize this phenomenal truth? Salvation begins with God and not with us, or not depending on our eligibility. Jesus said, God the father draws us to him. We respond with faith in Christ to get saved. It is not a coincidence or any chance that we come to Christ. We were chosen and not after we were born but we were chosen before the earth was formed. Think about it, we are astonished at how God created the earth and all that is in, We were chosen before this! Can we comprehend this truth?

This is one of the marvelous truth yet one of the hardest to grasp with our finite mind. There is a lot of debate on the understanding of this truth, but nevertheless, this is a truth that God chose us before the foundation of the world which makes us humble to come in awe before God praising his infinite grace and wisdom. God called us to be holy and blameless in Jesus Christ for his glory. We are blameless in the sight of God by the righteousness of Jesus. When we are in Christ, we have the assurance and joy knowing what started in eternity past came to reality in our present and will continue to eternity.

He adopted and accepted us:

God loved us and showed his love by adopting us into his family. He predestined the means through Jesus Christ as a sacrifice for us. We are free from our old nature and starting to live as his children. By getting adopted into God’s family, we have the inheritance and all the blessings of God’s family. Though we were not acceptable in God’s sight, he showed us his grace and made us acceptable through Jesus. God sees us through Jesus and we are acceptable. Thank God for the everlasting grace! When we realize what God the father has done for us to be saved, we come to complete praise of his sovereign will and grace.

When we count these blessings, we get assurance and encouragement for this life and we don’t have to live in a spiritual poverty without knowing what is in store for us. We can claim the blessings as a child of God. When God chose us before the creation of the world, how much assurance we need to have in our life? He adopted us and made us acceptable through Christ. Whatever you may be going through today, just think about the blessings God has showered on us. We can be rest assured that God’s providence will be directing us in this life and to eternity.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

  2. Thank you Peter, yes we are greatly blessed in Christ Jesus, we count our blessings and give thanks for them and also because we have been set free from the Slavery of sin, John 8:34-36 so we can aim to be perfected in Love, Jesus tells us to Seek, Ask and Knock and we are to also ask for God’s wisdom (James1:5-6) through the empowering of the Holy Spirit. (Luke11:13)

Proverbs 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

We also have to put our flesh to death as affirmed in the Scripture below as we aim to be perfected in Love, and when we do we will be like Jesus in this world and a fit vessel to be used for God’s good works.

2 Timothy 2:19-21 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, let every one that nameth the Name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the Master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

1John 4:16-19 Herein is our Love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in Love; but perfect Love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in Love. We Love Him, because He first Loved us.

Romans 8 :12-15 Therefore, brothers/ sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. or if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting Holiness in the fear of God.

1 John 2:4-6 He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His Commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth His word, in him verily is the Love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in Him. He that saith hebideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.
