Necessity for brotherly love

brotherlyloveGod showed us his amazing love and called us to be his children. How can we know if we are living as a child of God? Just like children reflecting parents character, in the family of God there is this character of loving our brothers and sisters in Christ which is reflected from God and shared in the family. This shows that we are the children of God. How many of us really live by this as a child of God? Do we realize the necessity of brotherly love? Where can we learn this from? What are the blessings when we show genuine brotherly love?

10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.-1 John 3:10-11

Necessity of brotherly love – In a family, parents love their children and it is this love the children share and build a healthy family bond. In the same way, God loves us and it is the same love he shows to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Through this common love we are becoming one family. Showing love towards others is an evidence that we are part of the family and saved from eternal death and regenerated through Jesus Christ for eternal life. Are we displaying this evidence of our renewed life as a child of God?

We know that God loves us but sometimes we don’t come to a realization that God also loves the person whom we ignore or even hate. Unless we realize that we are part of a family, we can try to imitate but cannot show the real brotherly love. Isn’t this ironic that even after knowing that this love is at the core for following Christ but yet we take it for granted and apply our human reasoning to skip this when we decide it is not needed?

12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.-1 John 3:12-15

Lack of love: John was addressing this letter to the church talking about the false teachers who were with them but left to show their real nature. We can understand this text better when we compare the false teaches with Cain who belonged to the evil. Cain hated his brother and killed him because God accepted his brother’s sacrifice and rejected his. Cain was supposed to love his brother if he belonged to God, but he displayed his real color like the false teachers and showed he belonged to the evil one.

If we say we have been reborn but do not show this love, it is contrary to our profession. We can see the truth in our claim based on the fruit of love. If we don’t have this fruit of love, we will be displaying the fruit of hate in our life like Cain. Just as brotherly love is an evidence of being a child of God, lack of love will show that we are not regenerated and not walking in the light of God but living in the darkness.

16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.-1 John 3:16-18

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.– Ephesians 5:1-2

How to love? Jesus Christ showed us the perfect love by giving his life as a sacrifice for our sins. It is the epitome of sacrificial love we need to reflect in our life. He just did not talk about this love but lived and showed to us as an example to be followed. Are we loving others with this sacrificial love? John says we need to show our love in action rather than just empty words. How many of us know that someone is in need and really have the heart to help them? God has given us his holy spirit who produces us this fruit of love in our life and when we abide in his love, we can share this love to others as one family.

19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.-1 John 3:19-24

Blessings of brotherly love: When we display this evidence of being a child of God, we have the confidence that we are regenerated and walking in the light of God towards eternal life. Even when we think that we have fallen short, we need to remember that our Father looks upon us through Jesus Christ and his love is perfect. When we have this confidence, we can come to God as a child and ask in prayer and he will answer us just as the father answers his children. When we live our life loving others, we are living and remaining in Christ and growing in fellowship with God.

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.-John 13:35

We may have heard about loving others many times but do we have this as part of our life? Do we realize its significance as a follower of Christ? There are over 2 billion professing Christians around the world. Think about it, the world can be a much better place if everyone loved one another and this love will show that we are the children of God touching other lives.

  1. Beautiful truth: “When we display this evidence of being a child of God, we have the confidence that we are regenerated and walking in the light of God towards eternal life.” Thank you!

  2. Excellent post! Great question, “Are we reflecting God’s love as we live within the world?” We need Jesus more than ever for the days are approaching (as we look at the nations around us) when Christians will have to make a stand for what is right and for Truth. Good thing we’ve read the last page of the Bible and have no fear!
