Growing in Faith

GrowinginfaithWe love to grow in all aspects of life and take actions for the growth. Think about in our profession, how do we rate ourself? beginner, intermediate or an expert. We know the category we are in and know what is needed to move from one to the next level. Do we expect similar growth in our faith? Are we growing ? Do we know the category we are in and how to grow further?

12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.- 1 John 2:12-14

When we believe in Christ and be born again, we are getting started in this journey of growth. God gave us a new spiritual life in us which like our human life has to grow and mature. Just as physical growth, John categorizes our spiritual growth into 3 stages: little children, young men and fathers in faith.

15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”-Romans 8:15

Little children: It is the stage of a new born believer in Christ. It is when we recognize our creator and received his love. We are adopted and got into the relationship with a privilege to call God as our father. God by his love gave us this life out of bondage. Even though it is an amazing and exciting experience to be able to be born again, the purpose is not just to stay there.

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby – 1 Peter 2:2

We are more vulnerable and weak in this stage. We are excited in following God but not able to withstand the temptations and trails in life. Just as babies need pure nutrition, we need to feed on the word of God to grow in to next stage.

Young men: When we grow from being a little child, we come a stage what John calls young men. We are strong and able to overcome the evil one and the temptations in life. We are able to walk steadily in the word and grow further. How did we become strong? It is because the word of God abiding in us. We are exercising our faith to gain more strength in the Lord.

Fathers: This is when we have the intimate fellowship with God and know the heart of God. As Paul said, we consider everything else as nothing when compared to know him more. John addresses twice to all these categories, notice he says the same thing twice to the fathers. This is the goal for our maturity. When we know more about Jesus, we walk more like him.

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.-Hebrews 5:12

Unlike the physical growth, spiritual growth may not come with time. We can be in the same stage for years without actually growing spiritually and the sad part is, we don’t evaluate like we do for professional and physical growth. It will be of great concern for us if we don’t see proper growth in time for these areas but acceptable when we don’t see growth in spiritual sense. Have you progressed through these stages in your walk? Do we know where we are in our growth?

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.- Ephesians 1:3

26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.- John14:26

We may be in any one of these stages, but one thing is constant. God’s love for us is the same and he has shown his love without partiality. He has given us all the spiritual blessings to have fullness of joy in our life but we enjoy these based on where we are in faith. We can enjoy as a children or young men or as fathers. The more we grow, the more we experience his blessings and more we can walk like him. We can grow from one level to the next when we really desire and abide in the word of God and God has given his holy spirit to guide and teach us in the truth.
